A capital gains tax arises when there is a sale of a qualifying asset.

This includes:

Sale or gift of whole or part of an asset
Exchange of an asset
Receipt of a capital sum derived from an asset (e.g. compensation received for damage to an asset)
Married couples and civil partners each is entitled to their own allowance.
However, there are many assets that are exempt such as sale of motor vehicles, cash etc. and many reliefs are available.
Equally, there are ways to organise your affairs to ensure that you achieve maximum tax savings here.

Charitable giving can be made under the gift aid scheme to save tax for higher rate tax individuals
Employees can use Payroll giving to save tax when donations are made to charities
Individuals should always check their tax code to ensure that the correct code is used to avoid overpaying tax.
Employees can use childcare vouchers to pay for nursery costs and save tax.
Where an individual’s spouse has a low income for the tax year, marriage allowance can be claimed to save tax.
